Marcos Arakaki, conductor

Marcos Arakaki is the Associate Conductor of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic. He has also led other important orchestras in Brazil, United States, Mexico, Argentina, Czech Republic and Ukraine. Pinchas Zukerman, Gabriela Montero, Sergio Tiempo, Anna Vinnitskaya and Sofya Gulyak are among the renowned artists he has played with. In 2001, Arakaki won the Eleazar de Carvalho Competition for Young Conductors and, in 2009, the Camargo Guarnieri Prize, both in Brazil. He has served as the Principal Conductor in the Paraíba Symphony Orchestra and Brazilian Symphony Youth Orchestra. Leading the Brazilian Symphony, he recorded the soundtrack for the movie Our Home, composed by Philip Glass. Born in São Paulo, Arakaki holds a Bachelor’s degree in Violin from the São Paulo State University (Unesp) and a Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Massachusetts. Over the last ten years, he gave major contributions to the development of new audiences for symphonic music in Brazil, participating in orchestral tours to more than 70 cities in the whole country.

Acclaimed for its artistic excellence and for its significant contributions to the expansion of guitar quartet repertoire, Quaternaglia is composed of Brazilian guitarists Chrystian Dozza, Fabio Ramazzina, Thiago Abdalla, and Sidney Molina. Over the past 25 years, the group released seven albums and a live DVD. Antique (1996) received the Carlos Gomes Prize. In 1998, the quartet won the Ensemble Prize at the Havana International Guitar Contest. Since then, they have regularly performed in various notable guitar and chamber series in the United States, Portugal, Spain, Australia, Cuba, Uruguay and Argentina. Besides recording many original pieces, Quaternaglia is especially well known for its interpretations of Villa-Lobos and Leo Brouwer, as well as for renditions of Renaissance and Spanish music.
