Mineiro from Juiz de Fora, João Carlos started his career as a violist of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic, where he holds the position of Principal Viola since 2009. He has studied violin with Bernardo Bessler and had classes with André Pires and Nelson Nilo Hack. He has also participated in masterclasses with Marie Christine Springuel, Luis Otávio Santos, Menahem Pressler, Nokuthula Ngwenyama and Roberto Díaz.

 

João Carlos was a member of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra (OSB) and, as a member of Radamés Gnattali Quartet, he received the 2007 and 2009 Rumos Itaú Cultural Awards. A chamber music practice enthusiast, he focuses his production also in the didactic and compositional areas. He’s the composer of award winning pieces and was able to present his work to Krzysztof Penderecki.

 

Some of his outstanding performances were alongside Antonio Meneses, Roman Simovic, Márcio Carneiro, Quarteto Bessler and Sigiswald Kuijken. As a soloist, he performed with the Petrobrás Symphony, with the Espírito Santo symphony, the Music School Symphonies of Minas Gerais Federal University (UFMG) and of Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ) as well as with the Minas Gerais Philharmonic.
